Speaking Across the Curriculum

Every day, you work hard to educate your students. But what good is all their knowledge if they cannot communicate about it, and if they cannot engage in dialogue or debate with others about relevant questions? What is more, what do students fail to learn if they cannot communicate about these questions with others?

For the reasons that these questions raise, speech is one of the most ancient liberal arts and continues to be the marker of an educated person. Much more than performance, speech encompasses audience analysis, research skills, knowledge, memory, composition skills, verbal and non-verbal performance, and listening. Yes, that’s a lot to master!

I know your classes are rich in interesting content material. As a CAFE consultant, I hope to help you develop meaningful communication exercises and rubrics that are appropriate for your field and your teaching goals. Such activities can be a way to test your students’ knowledge, or they can help students think through and overcome the specific communication challenges in your field, or they can invite students to enter and participate in a democratic forum as citizen.

If you have any questions or want to schedule an individual consultation, just give me a call. I hope to hear from you!

Being a citizen leader in today’s society necessitates speaking skills. If the year 2020 has taught us anything, it is that all aspects of communal, civic, and corporate life require an ability to adapt our communication to the context.  Therefore, I believe it is imperative for our students to be equipped with skills for communicating with diverse audiences and contexts throughout their personal and professional lives.

While teaching speaking may pose some unique pedagogical and administrative challenges, it can actually result in more engaging classroom discussions and collaborations.  Additionally, when students have the opportunity to develop speaking skills it may contribute to a deeper comprehension or application of course related content.

As speaking consultants, we want to equip faculty with resources, tools, and knowledge so they can develop appropriate speaking instruction, assignments, assessments, and activities for their courses.  We look forward to working with you through both CAFE workshops and/or individual consultations.  Please don’t be a stranger when you are in need of some speaking support!
