Sociology of Education, Dr. Milne, Fall 2019
This class examined the structure and process of education in modern society. I did not know what to expect from this class, but I gained insight on the theoretical perspectives of sociology within the educational system and its overall purpose. I was able to learn about the social, political, cultural, and structural factors that impact education. As a class, we were required to read and complete reading responses weekly as well as view current educational policies with a partner and critique and propose an alternative.
This class originally was not enhanced or considered to be Honors; however, there were 6 Honor students in the class and we were able to do a separate project to count as an honors requirement with Dr. Milne overseeing. We wanted to know what qualities make a good teacher. The project involved us coming together as a group to form research questions and then interview 3 types of individuals to gain some perspective. Three types of individuals were intervied- a parent, an administrator, and a teacher. Each type of individual was asked questions based on the research question- “What Makes a Good Teacher?”
I have provided our paper on “What Makes a Good Teacher” for your viewing pleasure!
*Note- This project was very insightful and I was interested in the outcome as well as being able to see different perspectives in regards to the teacher’s role.
