Aging and the Life Course, Dr. Pederson, Spring 2019
This course is suppose to be taken the junior year, but I was able to take it earlier due to the fact that I came in with my Associate’s Degree. It was pretty cool to be one of the younger students in the class! I was not really sure what to expect since I had never really taken a sociology course in high school or even in the classes I took at the community college prior to coming to Longwood. When looking at the title of the class, Aging and the Life Course, I assumed that is what we were learning; however, it was so much more than that! We learned about successful aging and the aging process, different aging theories, life transitions, and more. Learning about the life process from a sociological perspective, rather than a biological perspective, helped me understand aging as a whole. Throughout the course, we had 10 Thinking About Aging assignments from the textbook to do after reading a chapter which helped me better understand the content of the class as well as practicing what was being learned during lecture. For the honors portion of the course, we were required to listen to and transcribe two interviews completed by groups of students during a Yellowstone National Park trip. We met with the small group of honors students and Dr. Pederson to discuss our findings. As a class, we also had a final project that consisted of the following: an interview, transcription, research poster of our findings (themes/connection to literature in interview), and presentation. You will find my research poster that I created based on my findings (interview & transcription) as my artifact for this course.
