Introduction to Audiology and Hearing Science, Dr. Eubanks, Spring 2021
This class was very different for me personally and very different from the other CSDS courses I have taken thus far in the program. The course was an introductory into the “world of audiology”. I learned everything from the physics/psychophysics of sound, reviewing the anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, and an introduction to the profession of audiology. The class also introduced behavioral and objective audiometric evaluation and different types of screening for hearing loss. I was challenged in a way that I can take and use in my future profession as an SLP. There was an emphasis on understanding and being able to interpret audiograms (determine if there is hearing loss, degree of hearing loss, configuration of hearing loss, types of hearing disorders, etc.) , which was a challenge, but with more practice became better.
When I registered for the class, it was not an Honors course. However, the first week of class I was in contact with the professor and we had enough Honor students to do a split Honors section. As an Honors student, we had to do a project that was “different”. We had to research a topic of interest in the field of audiology and create a literature review powerpoint- I have provided the powerpoint and the abstract to my research for the project below so view at your own pleasure. I, personally, had only the experience of writing a literature review paper never in the form of a powerpoint. I thought it was a little challenging, but the finished product definitely impressed me. I was able to combine an aspect of audiology and combine it with a possible interest of mine later as an SLP. Through the struggles and challenges during a semester being half online and half in-person, I persevered and gained more knowledge that I can put to use later in my future career!
