MUSC 331: History of Music 1 Honors Enhancement

I took History of Music 1 with Dr. Kinzer in Fall, 2021. This is a writing and speaking intensive course that covers the history of the art music of western civilization from Antiquity to 1800. In this class we worked on developing an understanding of the chronological and historical development of music, and we were expected to be able to correlate developments in music with specific developments in the general history of Western Europe. We had several discussions on the role of music and its value in the early cultures of Western Europe, and we also learned how to better write about music in a scholarly way.

This was a course I chose to enhance for the Honors College. When deciding on the enhancement, Dr. Kinzer mentioned a project about the Longwood Wind Symphony that he had wanted to research for a long time to put in the Longwood archives. This was the beginnings of the project I completed and have included here, called The Origins of the Longwood Wind Symphony. The goal of this project was to compile several pictures and articles already in Longwood’s archives to better organize and display the Wind Symphony’s history chronologically. This enhancement mainly focused on the early conception of the group and its place in Longwood’s history. This project was put into powerpoint presentation form and presented on Research Day.

The below link will take you to the final PowerPoint presentation.
