For my Scientific Reasoning Pillar I took the PSYC 101 class Introduction to Psychology with Dr. Tim Ritzert.
This was my first Psychology class at Longwood University. I had always found Psychology really fascinating, and I took Sociology and Psychology in high school. However, this class extended on what I had already known, and provided me with opportunities I had never had! I was in the middle of deciding whether or not to change my major, and wanted to see if Psychology was something I wanted to go into. I chose this class to find out. Psychology is a subject I am passionate about, but I have always heard that there are not many jobs with only a Bachelor’s degree. I decided to check the class out anyway, and I had a lot of fun. I genuinely enjoy learning about the subject and was really excited. From the beginning, we were put into groups. I was weary, but my group members were really nice! We worked well together and were able to discuss the material from class. While I learned simply anatomy concepts in high school Psychology, in Dr. Ritzert’s class, there was more depth about the brain and the function of each section. There was one assignment where a clip from Shaun of the Dead was played and each person had to analyze the zombie’s actions to determine which parts of the brain had been injured. This was like nothing I had done before, but I had a lot of fun with the assignment! At first, it was a bit hard figuring out what the zombies were trying to do and what they couldn’t do because the clip was short, but once I watched it a few times, I was able to analyze where in the brain had they been hurt. While we were still at school, part of this course was participating in student studies. We needed to get four participation points, and on the registration website, I saw a study for anxiety. I know that I have anxiety, so I thought I would check it out. I first answered a questionnaire for one point to see if I qualified for the second half of the study. A couple weeks later I received an email telling me the answer: I qualified. While I am not allowed to talk about the specifics of the experiment, I found out I was part of the control group, and it was really cool and interesting to be a part of a scientific experiment for a subject I feel passionate about.
