I really loved this class and having Dr. Waggoner because it was so different from classes I had taken before, aside from my Bodies and Citizens class. As a whole, we recognized oppressed groups, analyzed how those groups are oppressed, and what can we do about it, but we also talked about sexuality, gender expression, and gender identification. In this class, I was able to view these topics in comic books, movies, songs, and TV shows. For many assignments, there were reflections that attached to the media artifact. It took some getting used to and practice because I had not done so many reflections or analyzed media for certain aspects before, but I liked looking at media I would not typically choose for myself. I enjoyed a variety of content. There were many projects, but one of my favorites was the final paper. I was able to delve into a great movie to analyze aspects of gender, culture, and representation. There were preparation assignments that involved building ideas together and organizing pieces of the movie that fit into examples of those head categories. Frozen II is a great new movie that breaks stereotypes that Disney typically has, and I was able to write about and analyze those differences and why those differences are important. Because so many children take in and absorb content and messages from what they watch, Disney has made a big step in showing that females can take charge and males can show and be emotional.
