Colleagues from the STEM disciplines have published an article in Science Education and Civic Engagement. Co-written by Suzanne Donnelly (Assistant Professor of Science Education), Alix Fink (Associate Professor of Biology and Dean of the Cormier Honors College), Mark Fink (Associate Professor of Biology and Chair of the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences), Leigh Lunsford (Associate Professor of Mathematics), Melissa Rhoten (Professor of Chemistry), and Kelsey Scheitlin (Assistant Professor of Geography), “Full Immersion: The Chesapeake Bay Watershed as an Environment for Learning Science in a Civic Context” appeared in the Summer 2012 issue of the journal.

Robert Webber

Dr. Robert Webber, Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science, has published an article in PRIMUS (Problems, Resources, and Issues in Mathematics Undergraduate Studies).  Entitled “Using Spreadsheets to Help Students Think Recursively,” the article appeared Volume 22, Issue 5, p. 365-372.

Michael Mergen, back from Chicago

Michael Mergen, assistant professor of art, just returned from a lecture in Chicago, where he took part in a two-person panel discussion, “America’s Competitive Edge and Global Standing,” in conjunction with the Museum of Contemporary Photography’s exhibition, “Peripheral Views: States of America, featuring 15 works from Michael’s 1600 Pennsylvania series.

Sean Ruday

An article co-authored by Assistant Professor of English Sean Ruday and Jen Wilson of the Field School of Charlottesville has been accepted for publication by the Virginia English Bulletin. This article, titled “‘Like Being on the Inside:’ Analyzing Advertisements with Adolescent Males” describes middle school boys’ experiences critiquing advertisements and provides educators with recommendations for engaging students in a critical examination of advertisements.

In addition, Sean Ruday received a contract for his book The Grammar Toolbox: Grammar Instruction, Metacognition, and the Common Core Standards. This book, which provides elementary-school teachers with research-based recommendation for grammar instruction, will be published by Eye on Education.

Gordon VanNess

Gordon Van Ness recently published an essay in the online James Dickey Newsletter

titled “The Question of Poetics: James Dickey and the Modernists.” In addition, he

has finished editing Death, and the Day’s Light, the last manuscript Dickey was

working on when he died and which has been approved for publication by the Estate.

Thomas Wears

Dr. Thomas Wears, assistant professor of mathematics, has been selected to participate in Project NExT (New Experience in Teaching), a national professional development program for new or recent Ph.D.’s in the mathematical sciences intended to enrich all aspects (teaching, scholarship, service) of a faculty member’s career.  Dr. Wears is the fourth department member to be a NExT participant.

Student Exhibition

“Short Twig: a collection of paper works” is an exhibition of prints, broadsides, and artists’ books consisting of handmade paper and various printmaking processes. This show features pieces created by current and former Longwood University Art students within the Printmaking/Book Arts BFA program. The artists include: Kevin Biddle, Caleb Briggs, Brittany Claud, Chelsea Colon, Andrea Damiano, Lindsay Decker, Melissa Dorton, Liz Hale, Amanda Haymans, Amy Jackson, Alexander Leonhart, Kristin MacQuarrie, Katie Miller, Hannah Newton, Antrice Petty, M. Spencer, Alyssa Strackbein, Dane Summerell.  See the artwork at the Main Art Gallery exhibition in Richmond, VA. The show will be up through August 31, 2012.
