Aesthetic Expressions- THEA 101 Issues In Theatre

In Issues In Theatre, Fall 2018, we looked at many different kinds of theatre, what goes into a theatrical production and the basic key terms and definitions of those terms. We had many in depth discussions about why theatre came to be what it is today and how it has evolved over time. We looked into some of the technical elements of theatre as well. We attended Longwood Theatre productions and met with cast members to talk about the process of putting on a show. My favorite part of the class was getting a hand on look at Longwood’s production of “Translations” when we visited the set and spoke to some of the actors. It helped to have a visual as well as a hands on experience to understand how a show is put together.

For our Final Assignment we had to create a miniature set design for a Musical production.  Working in a group of three we came up with the idea to design a set for The Addams Family Musical, specifically the opening scene in a graveyard. I painted the background and together we pieced a replica of the set together. When we presented it to the class we used our cell phone lights to create lighting and played a recording of the opening number to show our design. We shared facts about the musical and the history of the Addams Family. I have attached a picture of our final design project.
