This was not my first religion course that I have taken with Dr. Blincoe, I also took his Problem of Evil course. However, this course was not what I was expecting. I will admit that in the first half of the spring semester I barely understood what some philosophers where saying in their readings. I would not be able to understand the content until we went over it in class. I really struggled with trying to figure out the meaning of many of our passages that we read. At first I hated this class, I would dread going and could not wait to leave. As the semester progressed we started to read novels which were much easier to understand and find the underlying message. One book we read, Wise Blood, was my absolute favorite. I never wanted to put the book down because of all the strange things that were taking place with the characters.
My favorite assignment that we did was a dialogue group assignment. I was in a group of three and we had to relate the thoughts of theistic philosophers to a current real world issue. We decided to discuss the death penalty in the United States. My character argued against the death penalty and used Kierkegaard’s argument that a human being is always a human becoming. We had a lot of fun writing this assignment as you can see below.
