Goal 1: LSEM 100

Longwood Seminar (LSEM) was the first honors class that I took part in at Longwood University. The LSEM class was different than a typical college class because it was an “intro to college” class. We talked about all kinds of topics, such as time management, wellness, and self presentation. The self presentation discussion was the primary one that stood out to me. I have included my “self presentation” journal at the bottom.

This lesson was an important one and I’m glad it was covered in LSEM. Since the presentation, I have had to present myself many times to different professors, peers, and staff. First impressions are everything and I always need to keep in mind the image that I am giving off.

At the beginning of this past semester, I had to present a powerpoint to my English class about a reading that was assigned. As I was getting ready that morning, I found myself thinking back to that day in LSEM where we talked about how to dress. This was a professional event, therefore, I needed to dress professionally. Another example of when I need to focus on self presentation is during the first few days of classes. I need to show my professors that I am happy to be in their class and eager to learn. While this is includes dressing professionally, it also includes saying “good morning” to the teacher, paying attention and taking notes, and not falling asleep.

Positive self presentation equates to a positive first impression. Going forward into the rest of my classes at Longwood and even my future profession, I will always keep in mind the way that I am presenting myself to new individuals.

(In addition to my reflection about the self-presentation discussion we had in class, my artifact includes a little bit about how A presented himself. This is reference to the summer reading that was required over the summer. A is the main character in the book.)
