Scholarship

The main reason that a student attends college is for the academics. Sure there other benefits such as clubs to join and living on your own for the first time, but the primary reason is to earn a degree and eventually get a job. Here in the honors college, we pride ourselves on our academics. Our motto is, “It’s not more work, it’s different work.”

One way that the honors college has shown me that our learning is “different” instead of “more” was through my Honors Human Growth and Development class. While we have a traditional textbook that we work out of, the teacher also uses demonstrations and games to teach the lesson. For example, for the last three chapters, we played jeopardy to review the material. The class was still expected to read the chapters ahead of time, because the purpose of the game was for review and clarification. Another example from the same class was when we were learning about the different types of ways that children play. The instructor chose a couple of people to demonstrate the types of play, while the rest of the class observed the behavior. After, we had a discussion about what we saw and what we learned.

I feel as though my experience in Honors Human Growth and Development was an accurate representation of our motto, “It’s not more work, it’s different work.”
