The main goal of our program is to provide the highest quality treatment for our athletes when they come to us with an injury and progressively return them to the same athletic ability that they had before the injury. This can be measured through the results of functional screenings before an injury compared to after as well as through patient reported outcome measures.
Patient and staff education is one of our essential practices as a sports medicine team. Many different types of serious injuries that can affect an athlete’s health and quality of life can be prevented through patient, coach, and family education. The term serious injury includes concussions, head and spine injuries, and other systemic illnesses. We incorporate education about these injuries by hosting mandatory presentations on risk factors, symptoms, and proper equipment usage and require that each athlete and coach attends. We measure their level of understanding through a mandatory brief questionnaire about the presentations afterwards.
When it comes to recovering from an injury, an athlete’s mental health is always a priority. We view every athlete as a person first with their own individual needs when it comes to encouragement and progression through their treatment. Our goal is to establish a welcoming and open environment where the athlete feels comfortable talking to our staff about their concerns with recovery time or other social stressors. We use patient reported outcome measures to understand the athlete’s mindset during recovery and offer our full support and promise of confidentiality during any conversation with the athlete about mental health.
