Book Club Week Six

Book Club Week 6:

a. According to the author, in order to make a habit stick, one has to make it satisfying. Unfortunately, most people have bad habits because they find good habits unsatisfying. Select a “good” work habit you find unsatisfying but want to engage in more often. According to the author, how would you go about making that habit satisfying?

A good habit I have been trying to implement recently is not doing my homework in the bed or in the living room. I have a desk in my room with a printer and a whole bit set up for school and it goes unused for so long. However, something I have done recently is move my desk closer to my door so I see it right when I come in and I also bought myself a new chair and pad for my desk so that the place I sit is more comfortable for me and makes it more enticing to sit there. Another thing I did is decorate my desk and space around so I feel more relaxed as well at my desk.

b. When tracking a habit, the author says “don’t miss twice” and “don’t break the chain.” How can you apply this idea when working with clients to help them improve their quality of life

So the author mentions when tracking habits, “don’t miss twice” this refers to if they miss one day, try not to miss the second day and get right back on track. (Clear, J, “Atomic Habits”, page 204) When working with the clients you can apply this idea to the individual treatment plan, for instance if they miss a day because of family visiting, sickness, or just all around refusal, you can let them know it’s okay and that you understand why they missed but to help them and motivate them to get back to their treatment and goals as soon as possible. The same goes with “don’t break the chain” which ensures that you are making sure the client is working towards their goal everyday so in the long run it becomes just like clockwork and a routine for the client that is almost natural.
