Book Club Week One Discussion: Introduction and Chapter 1 Pages 1-28
1. Summarize Mr. Clear’s story in a few sentences. As a future recreation therapist, when you hear Mr. Clear’s story, how do you feel about each person’s capability and capacity for improvement despite their disability?
a. Mr. Clear when he was younger experienced a traumatic accident when he was hit in the face with a bat that was released from another kid’s hand and came flying backwards. The bat hitting his face caused a broken nose, two shattered eyeballs, and a number of fractures in his skull. These injuries caused a number of problems like seizures, him going into a coma and on a ventilator and had a long recovery road ahead. The on big thing was when he was in the process of healing he discovered a lesson he could use in a number of situations in life. The lesson was if you do things little by little like taking small steps it can cause great improvement for you are less likely to give up and go back to a bad habit and it teaches you a lot of patience. The little by little caused him to heal and helped him to become better and it led to a number of accomplishments in his life. After reading Mr. Clear’s story, as a future recreation therapist I feel very confident when it comes to each person’s capability and capacity for improving no matter the disability because I feel the lesson he introduces could be a huge success in the treatment of each person we come into contact with for taking little steps in each treatment allows for more positive attitude from each person as well as opportunity for much improvement in each step of the treatment process.
2. The author states “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems” (Clear, 2018, p.27). What does he mean by this statement? What does it have to do with changing habits? Give an example.
a. In the following statement above the author means or well how I interpret it to mean is if you focus on one single goal you have more room to fall back into bad habits because if the one goal does not work even the first time like you are expecting it to work you will get discouraged and lose interest or hope in it and you will give up and go back to the bad habits. If you have the wrong system you will not want to change you’re ways and then like only focusing on the goal you will not make a change. It has to do with changing habits in the fact that focusing on the overall system rather than a single goal will not allow you to give up so easy because you aren’t expecting immediate change but rather a routine of small changes that will build on each other every time soon turning into one big accomplishment all together. Each little change contributes to the overall improvement of your life. An example of this would be for instance in my life ive always been organized and had things to be set a way I like. I always had to have a goal for things no matter what it was but when I made a goal and I didn’t achieve it or didn’t do it in a timely manner then I felt discouraged or like a failure because I was not being successful. I can use this new idea in life with school by forming little steps to each assignment or each class that will lead me to success in the long run as in better grades and higher GPA which in turn allows me to get a better job in the future. So each little step I took leads to something bigger in the long run.
