EDUC 310-01: Foundations of Literacy Instruction

EDUC 310 is a required course for education majors and is typically taken during the 3rd year. It focuses on instructing future educators in literacy learning instruction as well as teaching them about the functions of literacy and the early development of language. Although this was not an honors course, I was able to enhance it along with several other honors students by completing an extra assignment that built upon things we had already done in class. This class taught me many different teaching techniques and helped me practice creating and writing my own lessons and lesson plans. This has been one of my favorite classes that I have taken so far!

Stella Morris, Spring 2021: Above is a copy of my honors enhancement assignment for this course. I wrote three lesson plans, each focused on different layout and design techniques that authors and illustrators use when creating their works.

Reflection: I had a lot of fun working on this project because I was able to use wonderful books that I love as mentor texts and could choose cool layout and design techniques used within them to teach students. The types of lessons in my enhancement project are those that show students how to enhance their own literary works and will help them become better authors and illustrators. They will also help students notice these techniques in the future when they read their favorite books. This project was very time consuming, but it was so fun to plan lessons that I will hopefully get to use in my future classroom. I know that I will use many of the techniques and materials that I learned about in this class when I become a teacher.
