CHEM 350

Quantitative Analysis

Junior Year, Spring 2022:

I have never been great at chemistry. This class really tested if I wanted to actually get a chemistry minor or not. This was the last class I needed to get my minor and before I even took the class I heard everyone say how hard it was. Most people usually get everything they need for their chemistry minor and then drop out of this class because it is so hard. I hated this class, the material was hard, the lab was boring, and I was failing the tests. Finally, I started to go to office hours every single week to get the homework done because if I did not do that I would work on the homework for hours without getting anywhere. It felt like such a waste of time. I studied and studied and still could not get good grades on the tests. I would get 100’s on everything else because I made sure I understood it. This is when I really realized I had severe testing anxiety. Grades are made to be such a traumatizing, life-changing thing, especially if you want to go to graduate school.

I learned to stop complaining in class because it would only make me hate it more. I went to my 8 AM every Tuesday and Thursday with a positive attitude and a very strong effort to understand and grasp the information. This way I would know that I have tried everything I could to get the best grade that I could get. I tried my best and ended with a B. I am glad I kept going with that class and finished out strong. Boy, am I glad it’s over.

I have attached my final eight-page lab report here. This lab report outlined chromatography examined through the Capsaicin Scoville Scale. We used freshly grown peppers and dried peppers. This was a very interesting lab because capsaicin has been found to have strong anti-cancer properties in multiple cancer types.
