Attached is a research power created by Kyra Valovick and myself during the spring 2020 semester. This was an independent research study with Jessi Znosko with help from Dr. Pederson and Dr. C. Franssen. This research project was testing the effect of volunteering on stress level hormones. We tested these in graduate student volunteers. It is important to note that this is an ongoing research study due to the limited about of time and previous studies regarding this kind of test.

This was my first ever real research project and it is something that I want to continue doing. I love seeing how things play out such as having no results to start seeing out hypothesis in action. This course really emphasized to me my love for science and see what affects what within the human body and outside conditions. This research was very special to be because I wanted to see myself how volunteering affected stress levels. It has really helped me to show how important it is to take care of your body. Even though our saliva wasn’t being tested, we had the opportunity to volunteer ever Friday at Heartland Heroes Horses. I could feel the impact of volunteering on my body even after one day. To see the data come to life was a whole other wonder. I hope to continue research in the near future with things that interest me as such. There is a very big difference when you do things you love rather than things you are just doing to check it off. This was something I loved and I knew that. Long term, maybe I will consider getting my doctorate in nursing research. Who knows?

SOCL 320

Attached is a final project reflection completed for the Sociology of Education course that I took over the 2019-2020 winter intercession to fulfil a perspective course. This was a reflection on a joint class discussion board. For the project itself, each student had to read a different article addressing ways to decrease violence in schools.

This class was very eye opening and interesting. While it did not relate to my field of study directly, it does affect lives around me and my future life in the far future with my children’s schooling. I have learned that things really aren’t as simple as they seem. There is a lot that goes into Education. Simply being a student, we don’t get to see a lot of those underlying things that must take place before we can even go to school. MY sister is an education major at another school and with this throughout the course all I could think of was her future classroom and all that it truly takes. Education really is a gift and there is a lot that goes into it. I hope to continue to recognize all that goes into educating. Furthermore, I hope to teach my children (in the far future) the importance of recognizing everything that goes into it so that they can better appreciate it.

PHIL 315

Attached is my final paper for Biomedical Ethics that I took during the 2019-2020 winter intersession. This paper was to consist of argument that I was able to pull from a scholarly article that had to do with biomedical ethics. For this paper I found an article about physician assisted suicide.

This course was a two week, three credit class that I was required to take for my major. It was a very, very interesting class. It really got me thinking and helped me to gain understanding from different sides of arguments. Furthermore, this class has benefited me by looking at certain cases that may occur in my future work place such as physician assisted suicide which is what I wrote about. If there come a time when I have to decide whether a choice is ethically immoral or moral, I will be able to use the knowledge gained though this class to make the most ethical decision. I hope to use this knowledge today as I make decision for what I believe is right and just. Furthermore, I hope to continue gaining understanding on different topics so that I am well rounded and well educated.

Attached is a PDF to one of the many heath assessments completed during Fall 2019 in my Nursing 210: Health Assessment Across the Lifespan class. The assessment was conducted on my lab partner. Had this been a real assessment and not a practice this would not be posted due to a violation of HIPPA. In an effort to minimize that even in a classroom setting all personal identifiers are blacked out. In this class I learned many different physical assessments from the head all the way down to the toes. This assessment is specifically focusing on the head, face, and neck region. Each aspect of the assessment is necessary and important in nursing care. Other physical examination assessments include; skin, hair, and nails; eyes; ears; nose, mouth, and throat; breasts, axillae, and regional lymphatics; thorax and lungs; heart and neck vessels; peripheral vascular system and lymphatic system; abdomen; musculoskeletal system; neurologic system; male genitourinary system; anus, prostate, and rectum; and female genitourinary system.

As of Fall 2019, this has to be my hardest class yet. This was the first class where we dove right into NCLEX style questions which included select all that apply. This class really taught me how to clinically think to prepare me for the clinical setting. It taught me basic skills that i needed to know upon entering a patients room. It taught me how to be comfortable touching, examining, and getting close to patients that may even be my age. It taught me that everybody is different. This things that I have learned from this course will carry with me. I remember one day after an exam I went straight to my professors office and let out all of my feelings because I didn’t think that I could get through, but that was not the case. This class taught me the importance of hard work and that if you really want something you have to go get it. I hope to take with me what I have learned to the rest of my classes, my life in general, and incoming students who will soon take this class and even other classes. Short term, I hope to continue to use these skills and grow upon them in the clinical setting.

Honors/Philosophy 320

I took this course called Markets and Morals during the Fall semester because I have enjoyed taking courses taught by Dr. Blincoe in the past. Before this course, I was not really interested in economics or the philosophy behind the market. However, as always, Dr. Blincoe made this course very interesting and I learned a lot. As a part of this course, we had to read several articles on the various types of economies including capitalism and socialism along with other less popular forms of economics. For my whole life, I have identified as a capitalist but after this course, I began to question my true stance on economics. As a part of the course, before each unit, we had to write a reflection about a topic that was going to be covered in the unit. I have attached the first reflection that I wrote about the definition and purpose of work.

Biography

Hello, my name is Sydney Warren, and I am from Stafford, VA. Every college I visited was an exciting experience, however Longwood kept coming back to me. I definitely feel like I made the right choice.

I am in the Lady Joans A Capella as a soprano 2, and I like to incorporate music classes into my schedule whenever possible. I took ukulele this spring semester and it was a fun and unique experience.

I started out my first semester as a CSDS major, however I quickly realized that it was not the right major for me, so I switched to mathematics. I was thrilled to be back in calculus in the second semester and I am very excited to keep honing my math skills in the future.

2019-2020

This academic year was monumental for many reasons. I finalized my major, chose a career path, and involved myself in various organizations, many of which I held high positions.

Honor and Conduct Board

In the fall semester I was a member of the Honor and Conduct Board. I learned so much about myself in the three day training we a part of before the rest of campus came back. I learned that I am very organized and strive for finite goals that can be accomplished. With each case I sat on came a new level of empathy and understanding. I feel so grateful that I was given a chance to see the inner workings of the student conduct process.

Student Government Association

Since I first arrived at Longwood I knew that I wanted to carry on my high school involvement in student government into my college years. In the 2018-2019 school year I served on the Student Government Association as a Freshman Representative and set my sights on becoming SGA President before I graduated. I am so happy to say that I have stuck with this goal and have made large strides in what I hope will result in my achieving it. In Fall 2019 I served as the Sophomore Class President and realized how heavily SGA impacts Longwood’s campus and each student that attends our university. After stepping away for one semester to recenter myself and take a breath from all my additional responsibilities, I returned to SGA and was elected to the position of Executive Senator for the upcoming school year of 2020-2021. Being a member of exec will allow me a unique insight on behind the scenes work and I am extremely excited to have this experience. SGA has quickly become my favorite aspect of Longwood and it was the first organization that truly made me feel like I had found my home away from home. During my time serving the student body I have vastly increased my abilities to organize events and have also discovered my love for thinking up initiatives and taking them on. I will keep working towards my goal of becoming SGA President and hopefully my next update will include that success!

Elwood’s Cabinet

Elwood’s Cabinet has caused me to take a look at my heart and has also given me skills in recognizing the needs of those around me. I served as the Director of Donations this past year and I have been elected to do so again for the upcoming year. Being a  member of this amazing organization, I have experienced exponential growth in both my personal and professional life. Running the cabinet takes an army and it is a lot of hard work, but it is so worth it. I have always had a heart for serving others but I never thought about the fact that my peers need serving as well.Elwood’s Cabinet won the Best New Organization award and that was a very humbling moment for everyone who volunteers for us. Knowing that students utilize our resources and appreciate our mission gives me a deep sense of satisfaction and makes me beyond honored to be a Lancer. It is because of this organization and my desire to serve that I have decided to join the AmeriCorps after graduation and then pursue a career working for nonprofit organization.

Writing Center

Perhaps the biggest professional development I have made this academic year was being accepted to join the Writing Center staff for the upcoming year. I have always loved writing and editing things and I knew that the Writing Center would be a fantastic place to gain work experience that relates to my degree. After undergoing five weeks of training, I was offered an official position as a Writing Consultant. I am eager to work with students and sharpen my skills as both a writer and a tutorer. This experience will give me a unique edge when applying to grad schools and I know it will serve me well in both my professional and personal development.

Attached is a copy of all the skills I learned in Nursing 220: Clinical Skills for Nursing Practice. These skills had to get checked off in the lab recognizing that I was competent before entering the clinical setting and advancing to the next level. The columns on the left is what was done in the lab and what is on the right is what was completed in the clinical setting.

Throughout this course I created a solid foundation for what nursing care is suppose to look like. While the attached assignment documentation was a key aspect to my success in this class, it continues throughout my time at Longwood within the Nursing program and continue to learn new skills and get those checked off on those skills. Due to Covid-19 I am unable to be in the clinical setting and/or lab, therefore upon my return to Longwood, my primary goal is to get back in the lab and refresh my skills before the start of clinical. Long term, I want to be able to successfully practice each of the skills on a patient in the clinical setting so I am closer to being ready to enter the field.

Biography

Hello! My name is Zamya Prosise and I am an honors student at Longwood University. I am a Liberal Studies major with a concentration in Elementary Education. In the future I plan to teach at an Elementary School in my county as a 2nd or 3rd grade teacher. My first year here at Longwood has definitely been one I will remember for the rest of my life. Before coming to Longwood I didn’t know any other students here, but I knew that this was the best place for me to pursue my journey in teaching, and my experience this year proves that I have definitely made the right choice. On the first day of the honors retreat I met my two best friends, and was able to meet and connect with so many people I know I wouldn’t have met if it wasn’t for honors. I am looking forward to meeting new people and trying new things in the coming years here in the Cormier Honors College.
