04. Historical & Contemporary or Behavioral & Social Perspective: Soc 320 Sociology of Education

This honors course was an enhancement course of Sociology of Education. There was a group of six of us that worked with the professor throughout the semester. Two of us were nursing majors the other four were liberal studies and education majors.

Through this enhancement, our group came up with a question that we wanted to research and learn more about. The question we decided to research was what makes a good teacher? We wanted to get the answer to this question from three different perspectives, so we each interviewed a parent, teacher, and administrative role and recorded the interviews. Next, we had to code and analyze all the interviews and find common themes across them. My group then wrote a paper about the key ideas and themes from the interviews with examples and research evidence.

I very much enjoyed this course even though it did not really relate to my major. It was very interesting the different topics we would discuss in class and think back to when we were in elementary and middle school. Professor Milne was also the best one day for a class he took us on a campus tour and we talked about different aspects of education and why they are run they are.
