For my semester research project my group members and I decided to investigate the different effects of plant growth between alluvial and upland soil on Brassica Rapa plants. More specifically, we looked at how alluvial and upland soils differ from each other in content from the greater Piedmont region around Farmville. In order to analyze the different characteristics between alluvial and upland soil we measured their organic matter concentrations, pH values, and particle size. Sixteen Brassica Rapa plants were grown in each of the soil samples for three weeks. Plant height and number of leaves were recorded, but were found to not differ statistically from one another. In conclusion, our study discovered that loose, unconsolidated soil is essential for significant Brassica Rapa growth.
