Formal Report

Reflection

In the many years of my professional career, I have never written a formal report. Now I have the skills and references to produce one if needed. The final, large project contained many of the course learning outcomes and professional writing guidelines we studied. It included a formal presentation as well to practice oral communication skills. I was paired with the same teammate as the brochure and press release. We worked well together incorporating both of our ideas and shared the workload. A formal report has a rigid design and we referred to our text and online resources frequently. The content, to analyze websites for good design, allowed us to delve deeper into the visual aspects of good design such as the use of color, contrast and fonts. We based our analyzation and recommendation on three key areas; visual appeal, ease of use, and transparency. The review of these key areas had an implicit base of several of the professional writing criteria we studied. For example, good usability test should be clear, concise, concrete, and grammatically correct, part of the 8 C’s of good writing. Good visual appeal reflects a pathos element, or appeal to emotion, another professional writing principle. This project also required a formal presentation to further deepen our oral communication skills.
