Serving others has always been something I thought was very important since I was young. It is one of the many reasons I’ve decided to pursue a teaching degree, because I want to help better the future of America. In high school I was on the executive board for Key Club, a club designated to helping others and raising money for those in need. I also was a Sunday School teacher, a volunteer for my Special Olympics Basketball team, and a volunteer for the Down Syndrome Association for Northern Virginia. I have a passion for helping others and hoped to carry this with me to college.
One of the first things I looked into when coming to Longwood was community service opportunities. During the honors retreat, one of the days we spent picking up trash which is not exactly how I envisioned the retreat, but it was such a rewarding experience. Throughout the year, I volunteered at a food pantry, relay for life, and at the Ronald McDonald House. During second semester I joined the sorority Alpha Delta Pi, mainly because I loved their philanthropy. Throughout the semester we did various activities to raise money for the Ronal McDonald House, along with going to one of the houses in Richmond to prepare breakfast for some of the residents. It was a very eye opening experience and I cannot wait to do more for them over the next three years. Attached I have included a picture of my big, Sarah Wright, and I from our day at the Ronald McDonald House. While there, we prepared eggs, bacon, and cinnamon rolls for them so they wouldn’t have to worry about breakfast and could focus on their sick children.
