         Welcome!

My name is Charlotte Murphey and I am a junior at Longwood University. I am majoring in Liberal Studies, Elementary and Middle School Education with a Social Science Concentration. From the time I was a child, I knew I wanted to become a teacher. I chose Longwood because they produce the best teachers in the state. I know that pursuing teaching at Longwood will open many different, exciting job opportunities for me. Upon graduation, I plan on pursuing a master’s degree here at Longwood.

This ePortfolio has been created as my final exam for English 400, Advanced Writing Seminar. The links listed at the top of this page take you to different assignments from this class. Each page also includes a reflection in which I reflect on course outcomes accomplished, as well as course outcomes that still need to be worked on. Class activities throughout English 400 have challenged me to understand the nature of public discourse through identifying purpose, audience, and context. With a greater understanding of such nature, I feel as though I have the power to be an active citizen. This course has given me the skills to engage in conversations about public issues through written discourse.

Course Learning Outcomes:

The students will be able to…

1) engage in the process of citizen leadership by investigating multiple perspectives on important public issues;
2) understand the nature of public discourse/debate as determined by purpose, audience, and context;
3) choose appropriate formats in writing for a variety of purposes;
4) analyze the effectiveness of their own texts and processes for specific rhetorical situations;
5) understand how the knowledge, skills, and values learned in general education are interwoven and interrelated, and how they can contribute to the process of citizen leadership.
