PHIL 308

This honors course was taken to fulfill goal 12, Ethics. The main focus of this course was to evaluate the ethical reasoning behind decision making, and determine the difference between ethical and moral values. In this course, we identified many different ways to look at situations, such as through point of views of Utilitatrianists.

One of the main projects of the course was to identify a controversial subject in today’s society, and evaluate the ethics behind that topic. For this, I chose to look at Capital Punishment, as I am a Criminal Justice major. In the following paper attached, the morality of capital punishment is evaluated using many concepts and arguments we used in class.

Morality of Capital PunishmentEmily Mothersbaugh November 6, 2018

Writing this document helped me to understand that there is a true difference between ethics and morals. Although I did not agree with the argument presented in the paper, I had to admit that it was a valid argument and the premises led to a sound conclusion. This course helped me to better analyze situations and judge them based on fact and personal opinion, which will help later in life. I hope to continue using this type of thinking, and challenge myself to think twice about the controversial topics in today’s society as I grow and engage in the world. Another goal of mine moving forward is to use this type of thinking in my courses, and understand that I do not have to agree with a topic I am writing about for a class.
