PSYCH 384

~Cross Cultural Psychology~

This course was taken to fill the Developmental Area for my Psychology minor, and was enhanced to be an honors course. Cross Cultural Psychology revolved around the differences in psychological responses across different cultures around the world. The entirety of the class revolved around lectures and notes, with tests around every 3 chapters and a personal reflection at the end of the semester on our own culture, tradition, and values.

I chose to enhance this class because I had taken multiple courses with the professor before and knew that he would be excellent to work with on an enhancement and have great ideas on what to do. I enhanced this course with a peer, as our project extended prior research that we had conducted the semester before. We each conducted separate research on peer-reviewed articles and studies published in psychological journals on our same topic, the use of Instagram on self-esteem, from other countries outside of the United States. Following this collection of studies, we then found similarities and grouped them to create a literature review section for our manuscript. We also extended our research from the semester before by promoting our survey that we had created to increase our sample size. The survey consisted of nine original items measuring self-esteem, likeability, and feelings, as well as other well-known Likert style scales measuring Narcissism and Social Media Addiction.

Attached below is our manuscript, as well as our poster presented on the on-line spring showcase from April.

~Reflection~

I used this experience to become more independent as a student while conducting my own research. On top of the collection of data, I was also tasked with interpreting the results and drawing a conclusion. This, along with creating a poster covering the entirety of the project, helped me develop skills in presentation of data.

This reflection developed my research abilities and added experience I can add to my resume. Prior to this enhancement, I had never been responsible for conducting research on my own, unguided, or given the opportunity to pull together all the data and literature I had collected into a single document.

My professor for this course presented my partner and I with the option of presenting our project and findings at a convention, which we likely would have taken had the pandemic not occurred. Both my partner and I are enrolled in internships this summer, so were unable to dedicate enough time to presenting at a convention but are considering doing so in the fall.

Me and my adventures at Longwood!
