Philosophy Importance

November 18, 2018

By: Valerie Melton

My Introduction to Philosophy class was very speaking and critical thinking intensive. My professor decided that we needed to understand why philosophy is taught and the reason behind why it is still essential today. In order for us to learn this, we got assigned a paper to which we were supposed to do research on the importance of philosophy, as well as familiarize ourselves with a few common philosophers. My attachment is the response I gave to the assignment prompt. The research I did for this paper showed me just how useful philosophy is and why it is important to keep it alive, even in todays society where this topic can sometimes be overlooked.

How Caesar Augustus Learned from Julius Caesar’s Actions

This paper was assigned as a free response, which meant that we did not have a specific prompt. Instead of a prompt, we had to create an argument based on the information that we read in our assigned readings for the class. This assignment taught me how to analyze texts and use the information I found in a creative way within my own writings. I was struggling with finding a topic to write about, so I went to the professor and realized how willing he was to help me. I ended up getting a decent grade on this assignment because I took the initiative to go to my professors office hours so I knew exactly what he was looking for in the paper.

This class had a lot of coursework. However, I felt that all of the work my professor gave helped me to understand the material better and prepare me for my next semester of Spanish. The attachment included is my final project (April 29, 2019). My partner and I were required to present this powerpoint to the class and we could only speak in Spanish. Because of this requirement, I was pushed to speak in Spanish a lot more than I had in the past. This project helped me learn about culture as well as it gave me the opportunity to show what I have learned throughout the semester. My partner and I were required to present this powerpoint to the class and we could only speak in Spanish. This requirement pushed me to speak in Spanish a lot more than I had in the past.

Aesthetic Expressions Pillar

Aesthetic Express Studio Art (ART 125)

At first I was a little skeptical about taking an art class in college, but I ended up learning so much while taking Art 125. I understood how to handle constructive criticism through weekly class critiques. I was also able to take the constructive criticism that I was given, and use it to my advantage by altering my artwork to make it better. these skills are ones that I will undoubtedly use in the future, and they were taught through a college art class which came as a big surprise to me.
