As a huge fan of music and radio work I was excited to join Longwood’s very own WMLU Radio. As a member of the station’s music committee it is my job to review albums for radio airplay. Musicians and artists send their work into our station where other members and I listen and judge their work. As someone with a broad taste in music I feel that my reviews are diverse and bring a variety of music to Longwood’s airwaves. I love participating in the committee so much that I have regularly written reviews in excess of eight pages. Below are some examples of my work.
Spring 2021
This semester was a great year for me and radio. During Fall 2020 I trained as a DJ to take the DJ certification test which I passed in February. Not but a week later the first official episode of my radio show went live on the air. During Spring 2021 I was DJ HP “the Hotch” Johnson, the host of Raiders of the Lost Record Crate, a variety show in which I showcased songs and albums from my personal vinyl collection. The show has been a huge success with a dedicated fanbase and even fanart! During Media Ball at the end of the semester I was awarded two Golden Record awards by WMLU: Best New Show and Best Variety Show. It was fitting considering that night was the last episode of the semester.
In addition to my role as a DJ I was also elected to the WMLU radio board as Chief Trainer. My outgoing personality and understanding of the radio equipment made me an ideal candidate, and with the support of the previous Chief Trainer I was elected to the position for Fall 2021. My first act as Chief Trainer was to administer a DJ test for a new member. She passed with flying colors and will be joining WMLU’s roster of programs next semester.
