Correspondence

Reflection: The Correspondence letters that I wrote during this semester consisted of a Bad News letter and a Persuasive letter. What I learned about professional writing by completing these two documents were how they can be used in the business world in and after college. I learned that a bad news letter is when you have to tell someone news that they may not want to hear, but you still have to write the letter in a polite way. I also learned that a persuasive letter is a letter where you have to try and persuade someone to do something that they may not want to do. These two letters are relevant to some of the course outcomes that we had in this class. One of the course outcomes that relate to the development of these letters is to create professional documents that use plain English (clear, concise, and grammatically correct). This is shown when we talked about how important our professional documents are, how they should be written, and to make sure they are followed by the seven C’s of good professional writing. The seven C’s are clear, concise, concrete, complete, courteous, coherent, and constructive writing. All seven of these types of writings were important when writing these correspondence letters. Another course outcome that relates to these correspondence letters is to analyze and produce writing genres commonly found in the professional world (e.g., business, gov., media). These documents would mostly be used in the professional world after college, but they are very important to learn how to compose and create them when needed. I think that one of the challenges that I faced while writing these letters is that before taking this class, I had never written or heard of a bad news letter and I had heard of a persuasive letter but never written one. Since I have never written either one of these documents before, it was a little challenging to come up with the information, but once I got started it wasn’t too difficult. This class taught me how to write and understand the purpose of both of these documents and when it is appropriate to use them. With these letters, they are mostly done in the professional world, especially in businesses. I think that it is important to know what these letters are used for and how to create our own letters when needed. Even though not all of us may use these types of letters ever again outside of school, I think that it was appropriate to learn these letters in this professional writing class.
