I took Hist 100 during the fall semester. While it is a Gen. Ed. Class, I was persuaded that the information in this class would consolidate my knowledge of the western world (considering my quest for international and general culture). Needless to say, my expectations were justified as the course’s name was Foundation of Western Civilization. The course taught us the events, the religious activities, and ideologies that helped shape the core principles of western culture. I particularly enjoyed the bigger emphasis on France throughout the lectures and was certainly pleased to discover their preponderance on the building of the western preponderance. The course required a book review, and mine discussed Myth and Society by Jean-Pierre Vernant where he advanced his theory of the direct influence of Greco-Roman culture on modern societies. Despite its lower level, the course was very challenging and demanded consistency on both the reading materials as well as out-of-class research.
