Return to Gen Ed Goals & Honors Courses

Hons – ENG 215: 9/11 Loss & Redemption

I must say, I really enjoy the honor classes. It might look completely anecdotal, but sharing a classroom with a concentration of well-rounded and determined peers just motivates me every time to do my absolute best. In any case, I had the chance to attend Dr. Lund’s class about 9/11. As much as we would like to forget it, 9/11 has had a huge impact on American life and whether or not we are aware of it, those tragic events have transformed contemporary societies around the world.  Throughout the semester, we uncovered some of these changes in the post 9/11 era in three fundamental steps. First, we reflected back on the several works exploring the culture and the societal norms prior to 9/11. Then, we spent the majority of the course discovering subtle changes in post 9/11 works. We discovered those changes particularly through the analysis of three major books and two TV shows. Clearly, both the post 9/11 literature and the cinematographic industry were impacted. In this respect, we were, finally, asked to create a project that would contrast society before and after 9/11. To complete this assignment, I decided to interview various professors in the History, Political Science, and Philosophy department to share their insights on the potential shift in their field of study after 9/11. Beyond the very interactive character of this class, what really sets it apart is its ability to make students more conscious of the impacts past events have on the present, and similarly how present circumstances can impact the future generations.
