Longwood Seminar, or LSEM, is a class promoted by the school to help freshman navigate their first few weeks at school while also learning about the history and all of the resources Longwood has to offer as well as learning about the surrounding Farmville community. Through the course of the class, we wrote varying papers ranging anywhere from out personal accounts of our 24 hours spent in Farmville, to just talking about the resources we intend to use while students at the school. I found this class to be helpful to me not only for helping me navigate school, but I also found myself with a plethora of information I have since used in other facets of my life at Longwood such as clubs and organizations. Through LSEM, I learned about the importance of knowing the history our wonderful school has to offer, to learning a great deal about the Farmville community as well. While I found the paper hard to write, perhaps my favorite assignment from LSEM was a paper in which we had to attend a town council meeting, then write about our experience. Being the politically interested person that I am, despite not much happening I found myself incredibly engrossed in the small town topics being discussed at the meeting. I felt a sense of home that night sitting in the town council meeting, as I have been in that same spot at home in Franklin with my grandfather. By far, I felt as though this assignment helped me feel more apart of the Farmville community, and I have actually decided that I want to attend more town council meetings when my schedule allows.
