Intro to Ethics (PHIL 308)

As stated in the syllabus, Philosophy 308 Honors: Introduction to Ethics was “An introduction to ethical theories and their applications to moral issues. This course has three major components: (1) a survey of the main normative and meta-ethical theories; (2) a detailed examination of the method of philosophical analysis; and (3) the application of ethical theories and philosophical analysis to contemporary moral issues.” In this class, Dr. Moore spent a majority of the class lecturing, and we were only expected to take four exams and write a paper at the end of the course. Throughout the course, we covered various topics, which because I was only a first-semester freshman and had not yet learned how to truly take in an honors class, could be very hard to understand at times. Dr. Moore made himself available to students whenever possible, and was always available to help if we could. Because this was my first honors class I was surprised to see how heavily touched on student response and student and teacher interaction. We were consistently asked to talk and discuss different theories and problems brought up in class, as well as give our own conclusions as to (usually) how ethical certain situations are. While Dr. Moore did a lecture, I found that I learned the most from his class thanks to how discussion based it was. My favorite and really only assignment in this class was my research paper, in which I argued that the way we treat companion animals versus the way we treat animals for consumption is morally wrong. While I did not necessarily agree fully with my topic, this paper gave me a valuable learning experience through having to argue for a point which I may not necessarily agree. This paper was also my first ever foray into the world of APA style writing and college writing in general.  I was proud of myself that after multiple fails in my first drafts, I received a 95 on my final draft of my paper and I am thankful to have had this experience under a professor

as caring as Dr. Moore.
