Leigh Lunsford, Professor of Mathematics, presented “Helping Statistical Concepts ‘Click’ with Students” (January 10) and co-taught the MAA minicourse “Teaching Introductory Statistics (for instructors new to teaching statistics)” (January 11, 13) at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Antonio, TX.

Wendy Smith

Wendy Smith, Associate Professor of Mathematics Education, co-presented “Turbo-charging freshman engagement in introductory courses through a 2-lecture motivational seminar on how and why to succeed at college mathematics” at the 2015 Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Antonio, TX on January 12, 2015. Dr. Smith will expand on this topic at her Blackwell talk on March 16, 2015.

Brett Hursey’s plays win awards

Brett Hursey’s original plays were produced 25 times in theatres across the United States in 2014, earning 23 awards. The venues included four off-Broadway sites in New York.

Robert Marmorstein

Dr. Robert Marmorstein presented a paper, “Teaching Semaphores Using . . . Semaphores”, at the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges Eastern Region Conference.  The article will be published in the Journal of Computing Sciences in Colleges.

Dr. Christopher Swanson conducts the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra

Sunday afternoon, October 26, Chris Swanson had his debut performance with the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra as the conductor and artistic director. He conducted Les preludes by Franz Liszt, An American in Paris by George Gershwin and the “Eroica” Symphony by Beethoven. While it was Swanson’s first concert with the orchestra, the LSO has been around for 32 years. Swanson will return to the podium on December 6 at the Academy of Fine Arts where he will conduct music by Tchaikovsky and May 9 at EC Glass Auditorium where he will conduct music by Elgar and Mussorgsky. Chuck Ross Delivers Keynote

Dr. Chuck Ross, Professor of Physics, delivered the keynote address at the University of Mississippi’s Conference on the Civil War on October 10. Dr. Ross’s presentation was “Black Powder and the Cannon’s Roar: Science and Technology in the American Civil War”.

Dr. Christopher Swanson

Dr. Christopher Swanson recently was named the conductor and artistic director of the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Christopher Swanson

Dr. Christopher Swanson recently visited the College of Music at Michigan State University in East Lansing Michigan where he gave a masterclass to undergraduate singers and spoke at a seminar for graduate students on entrepreneurship in music. During the same trip to MSU he attended the conference for Association for Inter-disciplinarian Studies.
