Book List: Putting Diversity in Literacy in Action

This is a book list created for a lower-elementary classroom that contains various books regarding diverse topics regarding the world around us. Topics span a wide array of diverse issues, including poverty, immigration, and bullying.

50 Strategies for Teaching English Language Learners

This is a list of 50 Strategies that can be used in the classroom to support ELL students. The strategies are sorted into different categories for their most optimal use.

 

Rationale

Knowledge and understanding of diversity and equity are essential in the creation of a suitable learning environment for every student. The artifacts from this standard have to do with a culturally responsive environment and being a culturally responsive teacher. The diverse book list allows for a culturally responsive classroom that “advocates for an inclusive and affirming classroom and school environment” and (ILA 4.3). The collection of 50 strategies to be used with ELL students “demonstrates knowledge of foundational theories about diverse learners, equity, and culturally responsive instruction” (ILA 4.1). The knowledge I have gained regarding diversity and equity allows for me to be a culturally responsive teacher that creates a welcoming and accepting environment for students (ILA 4.2).
