Intro to Race & Ethnic Studies, HONS 295

In this course, the class focused on the history and the experiences of BIPOC in America, racism, representation and stereotypes in the media, and social justice movements. We often had guest speakers who spoke to us on a variety of subjects, such as the impacts and the effects of white privilege, the importance of environmental justice, and the impact of incarceration on communities.

We had a variety of projects in this class, one of them being a week long investigation on representation of BIPOC on cable television and presenting our discoveries. Another was writing a paper on a seminar we attended relating to a topic we had discussed in class (I chose one about racism within the child welfare system and how it impacts the mental health of children and their families).

Our last project was a creative one, in which we made something that represented what we had learned in this class. I painted an image that captured my thoughts and feelings about racism, supported by quotes that had inspired the image and my journey of growth and understanding for others in this country, even as a minority myself. This was a great and informative class which I recommend to anyone who aspires to be a leader in their community.
