Portfolio Reflection 1 : Institutions

Several classes that I have taken that deal with some form of institution have been. Sociology in disability, Sociology in family and marriage, Sociology in law, and Sociology in sexuality and gender. In Sociology in disability, I learned more about disabilities. I originally didn’t know much about the subject but once I took the class I had learned there were different perspectives towards disabilities. I also learned that there are also many different kinds of disabilities. In Sociology in family and marriage, I learned about the institution of family and marriage and its importance of how people view one another. Also coming to understand the alteration of what the family was once known to be to what it can be now. Sociology in law had taught me to pay attention to my environment. It showed me how law can alter our daily lives while also setting a bar to what is acceptable and unacceptable socially. It taught me to think critically on the events that could take place in the future and what impact it would have on our society. Not only local or federal laws but also the laws and actions taking across the world. Like how an event across the ocean could have impacts on our lives. Two separate classes on sexuality and gender had taught me that gender and sexuality are both not only social constructs but they also change as well. I didn’t know much about sexuality and gender before I took the class. When I did take the class it allowed me to view the history and their cultures and their views on these subjects and gave me a better and deeper understanding of sexuality and gender. The information that I obtained from these classes have allowed me to view the world in a new perspective. Being able to see how different people are and for what gender and sexuality means to people. This new knowledge would allow me to corporate with others more affectively when dealign with more sensitive subjects of this caliber.
In my Sociology in disability I had written a paper that challenged me to take something that I personally used and make it more disability accessible. I decided to focus on my Twitch channel that I have worked on for the past several years which I also do charity work with. I had to take what I had learned about in my disability class and apply it to my work. This paper had allowed me to look at something I had seen everyday and look at it differently for the purpose and betterment of others. This paper challenged me to take something that I am deeply attached to and apply others peoples situations to what I do. This allows me to apply other peoples situations, how ever unique they may be and to think critically on how I can make things more accessible for others. Being able to think not only creatively but critically will be an invaluable resource when it comes to joining the work force. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JRRQs1gmsKWMB7ecCGqNn1imMxgxbLoom7U7lmfo6V4/edit?usp=sharing  In my Sociology in law class, I was taught to write papers with a simple prompt. I was so used to writing papers that had a guide or what was required listings. In this class we were given a prompt “How important is international law and how effective is the notation of international law?” We were then expected to have one scholarly article and our assigned reading and use it to support our claim. This had challenged me because I had to choose one or the other and explain why I think the one I chose was more important with little to no guidance other than my thoughts on the subject and evidence I could find to support my claim. This made me learn more about how to compose an option piece that relied on supportive information. Being able to write papers or documents for convincing people will be incredibly useful for the purpose of convincing people with in my field about how to improve certain issues or reasons to support a certain action or not supporting the action at all. https://docs.google.com/document/d/15A4c5waQAN7JYL8HQO1omuxn7z5-Thfhc778xKAKkic/edit?usp=sharing In Sociology in family and marriage I had to complete a project that was done over the entire semester. It was a Marriage Contract assignment and paper. This project and paper had me make a fake marriage contract to see how well I could cooperate with my potential significant other. This also allowed me to view how a marriage is plan, constructed, and put into action. It did allow me to view the institution of marriage differently and really made me open my eyes to what marriage means and what the point of it is from an individual and government standpoint. This project forced me to work very closely to another person on a delicate concept of marriage. This helped me bolster my skills not only as a writer but also my group working skills as well as communication skills. Which will both be highly useful for the when dealing with HR work which deals heavily on working with others and sometimes dealing with sensitive topics. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ikuFQQHZkNiaZQRz8d7QJLne2kNWFFy-uV6LKEV8g6U/edit All of these papers had challenged me to think critically, tested my creativeness, and have pushed me to become a better writer. As well as working on how to organize my thoughts words and ideas and put them onto a paper that would make sence.
