Classes I have had that have dealt with inequality:
Society and sexuality
Society and gender
Sociology of (Dis)Ability
Race and Racism
Sociology in Practice
Deviance
Marriage and the Family
Orginaily I didn’t understand the world of disability. Once I started to take a class whose whole purpose was to focus on the world of disabilities it opened a new world to me that I wasn’t aware of before. Once I started the course I started to learn more about disabilities. I learned about what they mean along with how they are perceived in my society through readings and analytic information. I had written a paper for my final for the class on a system I would modify or change for the purpose of being more inclusive to those with disabilities. I had written into how I would take the knowledge from this class and be able to apply it to a real world concept. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JRRQs1gmsKWMB7ecCGqNn1imMxgxbLoom7U7lmfo6V4/edit?usp=sharing Due to that class I was able to apply my knowledge to be able to help those with disabilities.
In my class on Race and Racism, I was able to learn more about the complex ideas of race. As well as learn about race and how it has become an idea that would affect one’s life. In this class I was tasked to think more critically in talking about the concept of race. In this class I learned that race isn’t just about a color of skin but is a concept that was made by humans as a way to construct groups. When talking about race and the inequality found tied to it. We found that a lot of equality that took place was also tied to historical ideas, concepts, and laws that were passed. The historical context is one of the many issues that created the inequalities that are still prevalent today. In class we come to learn that African Americans have the least likely chance to be hired for jobs, own a home, have some of the highest chance of incarceration and this is due to a lack of opportunities that African Americans were given. This is primarily due to laws that limited their ability to purchase homes, go to certain schools so that they could improve their lives with education.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LMkkPb2b5AFW0DH2IJiR72xKJSfVFiz4RFm6U94pcpo/edit?usp=sharing I learned that I must think more critically into why things are the way they are. I also learned that the inequalities are due to not only individuals or society, it is a mixture of both. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Kv22FKDf1i7QlS-KTdVL8MVVASthrvhb-L4lMPA7fq0/edit?usp=sharing The reading here I had to write about my perspective on the social justice system. I had read in one of the books “Punished: Policing the Lives of Black and Latino Boys” that when the boys would break a law and go to jail that they aren’t taught how to act in society. They are beaten and told to be a man. With little to no real explanation to what they mean. The boys are not given any opportunities to improve their behavior nor are they respected witch aids this concept of a positive feedback loop where due to lack of opportunities leads to only more issues happening.
I think with all the skills and knowledge that I have gained form these classes will allow me to have a new perspective on race and disability which I can use to help ease the inequalities that are found in my job. They will definitely affect my perceptions of people and the issues that they deal with. This can help me better understand their situation and communicate a little more effectively compared to if I didn’t understand their feelings or issues that they have.
