Don’t forget your USB drives!

Due to security concerns, we can no longer check lost USB drives for contact information. At least once a week we’ll be turning these over to campus police, but as you can see, a lot of them look the same. You might consider putting it on a long string tied to your bag, or putting your name and/or email on the outside so we can contact you if we find it left behind.

USB drives

Any of these look familiar?

Whatever method you use, be sure to backup your data frequently, in case you do lose your drive. Does anybody have any tips to remember your USB drive? Share them with us!

New Chat and Text

Welcome back from Spring Break! We hope you had a nice time off — while you were away, we’ve been busy!

We’re in the process of adopting some new technologies on our end, and this includes a new chat service. Most users will be unaffected, but we wanted to let you know of some of the changes:

  • It looks a little different!
Put your name in (if you want) and type your question. Someone will answer your question as soon as possible. If it is after hours and nobody is staffing The Desk, you will be able to search our Knowledge Base to see if anybody has ever asked your question before.
You’ll also see “Ask Us” buttons in our guides and on our website; this will also launch the chat.

You’ll be able to rate your chat experience and email yourself a transcript when you are finished.
  • There’s a new text number: (434) 406-4957
You can text us any questions — when we’re available for chat, we will respond.
  • We no longer support outside chat clients
So if you’re using AIM, GTalk, Yahoo or any other client, we apologize for the inconvenience. You are always welcome to email us at refdesk@longwood.edu if you do not like using our chat widget.

This new service has a lot of features on our end that will help us provide you with the best service possible. We welcome your feedback!

Database Downtime

Several databases will be down for maintenance March 1st and 2nd; users may experience slow connections or be unable to connect at all during this time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you need help, please feel free to contact us and someone will get back to you in one or two business days.

Your feedback helps us make the Library better

Starting March 18th, Greenwood Library will be conducting the LibQUAL survey of library service quality.  Longwood students, faculty, and staff will receive emails with a link to participate in this nationally recognized survey.  Participants may choose to enter a drawing to win an iPad with Retina display or Solo headphones by Beats by Dre.  The survey will close on April 5th.

By participating in this five-minute survey, you will:

• Let us know what services work best, and where to target improvements

• Help us better understand how the Longwood community rates library services

• Allow us to benchmark results against other libraries to determine best practices

If you participate, your responses will be kept confidential. No identifying links between responses and the individual responding will be retained. Only combined data will be reported.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Mark Lenker, Librarian for Instruction and Research Services, at lenkermn@longwood.edu or 395-2257.

We look forward to your feedback!

Library System Downtime October 25

On October 25th, we have scheduled maintenance to our Library system and it will thus be down for most of the day.  This means that Self Checkout kiosks and the Library Catalog will be unavailable during this time.  However, you may still check out materials at the Circulation Desk or search the catalog through OneSearch.

This maintenance is the first phase in migrating the existing Library system to an improved version, which we hope will help us serve you better.

Important Printing/Photocopy Charging Changes

Who’s effected?

  • Everyone who prints in the campus computing labs or who prints/photocopies in the Greenwood Library.
  • Non-affiliated users: If you are not affiliated with Longwood you may purchase a “Guest Card” for $1 at the Add Value Station located in Lankford Hall.  You will then need to add funds to this card through the same machine or in the LancerCard Center located in G22 Lancaster Hall

What’s changed?

  • You must have a cash balance on your Lancer CA$H account to print or photocopy in the labs and/or Library.  Print charges will no longer be billed to your student account.  Photocopies cost $.08 and computer prints cost $.09 for b/w and $1.00 for color.

When does this change take effect?

How to deposit money:

  1. In person at the LancerCard Center in G22 Lancaster Hall (cash, checks, MasterCard and Visa accepted)
  2. At the Add-Value station in Lankford (cash only)
  3. Online at www.longwood.edu/lancercard (MasterCard and Visa)
