Science has always been a subject I have struggled in, so I was hesitant when I realized I need to take one for my goal. Yet, I found Environmental Science to be a great class, even with the difficulties I faced. I find it hard to remember topics in science when it comes to exams or quizzes, except I was able to study hard and improve not only my exam grades but also my research paper I spent the semester working on. I have never been the best at writing papers, and during this course, I had to write my first “real” research paper (included below) then present our class’ research poster during the Honors Poster Session we have semesterly. We discussed the urban heat effect on campus and how it affected the campus and the environment around Longwood.
This environmental science class proved to be challenging but helped me grow significantly as a scholar and peer. We spent a lot of 1:1 time with our professor as it was a class of 7 of us. The feedback I was given was critical to my improvement in my paper because my first draft was definitely rough. I learned a lot about the world around me, but also about myself through the completion of one of the more demanding courses that I have taken.
