The Race Between Education and Technology

  1. Inequality in the 21st Century Textbook
  2. This article talks mostly about the levels of education and the wage that workers receive
in the United States. It explains the changes in the national economy and what
education had to do with that. The biggest argument that was talked about was
technological changes requiring employment for higher skilled workers. The challenge
with new technology is people with higher education are able to pick up faster on new
skills. People that are slower were either not promoted and were paid lower. With
income inequality, it started at a lower level then began to increase over the years.
  3. This relates to earlier course material when we talked about social stratification. This is
the ranking of people and groups in society. You can think about it like layers of a rock. If
you have access to fewer resources than you are in the lowest layer. You are born into
the class you are in and some people do not have the resources to get the higher
education to be able to be promoted to the higher technology changes with their jobs.
  4. I learned that by the intersection of the downward sloping relative slope and the upward
slope relative supply curve, determine the wages for two groups. The two groups include
the skilled or highly educated or the unskilled and less educated. This plays a big factor
in the rising of supply and wages for college students.
  5. After looking at the income inequality and education levels of Americans and college
students, what would happen if we factored in men and women. We looked at data
tables and supply and demand curves but would the graphs change dramatically if we
added in the employment and pay of men and women.”

Methodology (section) Paper from SOCL 345

Data and Methodology
Instrument
A survey questionnaire was created by the 50 members of the Social Research and
Program Evaluation team at Longwood University. The survey asked both open and close-
ended questions. Items on the survey were designed to evaluate SMART objectives of five
activities that were completed the previous week by Head start and Andy Taylor Center families. Items were included that also addressed demographic information, enjoyment of the activities, family involvement, and completion of the activities. Hard copies of the questionnaire were delivered to Head Start and the Andy Taylor Center.

Sample
The nonprobability sample for this study was based on 100 children (ages three to five
years old). Seventy-nine children attended Head Start in three counties. Head Start is a
federally funded subsidized preschool for families with economic need. Twenty-one children
attended the Andy Taylor Center which is located on a college campus and families apply and
pay for their children to attend. Attached to the questionnaire was a children’s book to
incentivize families to return the survey. Guardians of the children were asked to complete the
survey and return it to the preschool the next day. Teachers sent a reminder home with the
children to return outstanding questionnaires. This resulted in _ questionnaire being returned. Overall, there was a _ % response rate.

Quantitative Analysis
Quantitative analysis of the returned surveys was based on the close-ended questions.
For this study the dependent variable is Family Involvement. The item from the questionnaire
that was used to operationalize this was “How involved was your family throughout the activity?” The attributes for this item were “Scale 0-10; 0 = not at all, 10 = a great amount.” For this study the independent variable is if the family completed the activity. The item from the questionnaire that was used to operationalize this was “Did your family complete this activity?” The answer choices for this item were “1. Yes 2. Started, but did not complete 3. No (please skip to activity 5).” Descriptive statistics were used to analyze these variables.

Qualitative Analysis
Qualitative analysis of the returned survey was based on open-ended questions. The
open-ended questions on the survey were, “What did your family enjoy most about these
activities? Why?”, “What did your child learn from these activities?”, and “What
recommendations would you suggest to make these activities better?” To answer the research
question, “How do family fun activities affect family involvement?”,inductive open coding was
used to determine reoccurring themes in the respondents’ responses.

Institutions Paper from Health and Wellness where we talking about different health institutions and interviewed family members.

Reflection of Methodology Skills

My writing about methodology has changed over time because I have now gained the understanding of scientific research with qualitative and quantitative methodologies with an emphasis on social science research. In the past I knew how to discover academic articles to build my research but never understood the key points and being able to point out the methods and purpose. I could see my process of growth when learning how to complete successful academic research and I am capable of reading a scholarly article and pinpointing what kind of methods were used, the research question, the research issue, and the important findings. When doing research I am able to focus my investigation on the particular issue and word it in a way that can help the audience understand. Also, when writing about the methodology I now know that it is one of the most important sections of a paper. Before, I would just write in paragraph form for whatever I was writing about but now I know how to find the methodology and give an analysis of my findings.
