World History II

Taking an online class for the first time was a new experience, taking it in two weeks was daunting. I took this course over the Winter break as a way to catch up and get ahead. The style of the course was tough and trying to do assignments along with another class at the same time was a choice I was unsure of was a good one but at the end of the day I made it through… with the flu… talk about a whirlwind. What I can say is that it taught me to strive at my worst and that as long as I try, I can succeed. This assignment came with the need for book reviews, so this is the best one I came up within this class.

French: Begin Integrated Language & Culture

Walking into this course I had expectations. I expected the course would parallel the first section of the french I took. Boy, was I wrong. This class was nothing like the first one and I can admit that I went into this class with no hope or effort. It did not help that it seemed like I got the bottom of the barrel with the professor I had, but at the end of the day, I worked really hard to pass and officially be done with a language. I can say the experience was a teaching moment through my need to learn on my own and get the information enough to keep going in the class. While others were on the second go-round, I can officially say that I passed on my first try and that in itself is an accomplishment. What I have to go with this section is one of the responses I had to do in class. The topic was on things like Zoom and online learning.

NURS 310

Attached is one of my discussion post’s from one of our units in Principles of Pathophysiology during the spring 2020 semester. Each unit/each body system we covered we had to write a discussion post regarding one particular disease. The system for this post was the cardiovascular system and I wrote about dyslipidemia.

Pathophysiology was a very challenging course for me. It was similar to anatomy and physiology, but nursing version meaning all tests and quizzes were NCLEX style. This was definitely a learning cure because I felt as though I knew that material, but knowing the material isn’t the only thing you need to know in nursing. It is important to be able to critically think as well. I learned how to really utilize my resources such as office hours and all of our text books. In addition, I really learned the importance of time management. Simply reading the textbook was not going to fly, but applying what I learned to what I was seeing in the clinical setting in NURS 230 was a very critical point in this class that I learned. My short term goal from this course if to really focus on my time management in my junior year. Long term, I hope to use these skills I learned through the nursing test taking tips that my professor in this class shared with us in order to pass the NCLEX.

Attached is an evidence based research project for Foundations of Nursing Practice completed by Grace Ault, Hope Barnhart, Ryleigh Turner, and myself, Kelsey Swegle. This project was suppose to be shown at Research Day spring 2020 just like the HONS 490 presentation previously discussed. This was one of out final projects in the class as we brought all of our knowledge together.

Nursing research is consistently being conducted. With that being said, it is so important tot stay on top of the changing information and data because it is changing and altering everyday. We must stay on top of it so that we can give the best care possible that show the best results. This is why evidence based practice is so important. Evidence based practice is something that has be proven to work or proven to be true through research. In the health care settings I have seen restraints at use. I have seen both the positive and negative effects of these restraints. I have learned so much, yet there is so much more to learn and the only way we will learn it is if we conduct evidence based research on it. I hope to continue research throughout my time at Longwood. I know I have a research class coming up during my junior year specifically geared towards nursing. I am interested to see whether or not that will alter my career path. There are so many different ways I cant take with nursing, but like I said in one of my other posts, maybe I will end up getting my doctorate in nursing research in the future.

This course was also my first nursing school clinical rotation.  Though this course I have given my first real physical assessment. I have held a patients hand. I have talked to a patients family. I have held a patient when they cried. I had fed a patient when they couldn’t move. While I work in an acute care setting at home, this was a different experience. This was nursing. That alone has changed my life. I remember walking out of a patients room one day with one of my peers and we both looked over at each other and said “we made a difference today. We actually did that. I love nursing.” That is the feeling I hope to feel every single day of my life.

POSC 100- The American Political System

I took this class with Dr. Harbour in Fall 2018, my first semester at Longwood. I enjoyed this class so much more than I thought I would. Learning about the inner workings of the American political system intrigued me to the point of considering changing my major to political science. If you have read my biography, you know it doesn’t take much for me to consider such things! This class made me eager to learn more about the way our country is run and take a deeper look at the people who are in the highest seats of power. Two years later and I still apply topics I learned in this class when I watch the news and when I decided who I will vote for. Other than the fact that this was an 8am class and I did not particularly enjoy my professor, topic wise, POSC 100 has been one of my favorite classes at Longwood.

Attached is a presentation by Grace Auld and myself from Microbiology for a Healthcare Professional in the spring 2020 semester. This presentation was a selected bacteria, Mycobacterium ulcerans, in which we conducted research on and then made a presentation about. This presentation was suppose to be conducted in front of the entire class, however due to Covid-19 the presentation became online with pre-recorded voices. While completing this project we had to research basic information, the disease it causes, signs and symptoms, transmission, occurrence, and treatment.

Microbiology had to be one of the coolest and most exciting classes I have had to take. I absolutely loved lab. During this time we made our own agar dishes, autoclaved our instruments, identified different types of bacteria, and so much more. This class gave me the background understanding as to how and why different illness and diseases occur due to the bacteria that caused it. It is a course that I will grow upon. It also correlated with Pathophysiology which I also took spring 2020. Because of that I was able to bounce off different objective and find connections in between the tow despite them being two different classes. In the future I hope to look at working in a heath care facility in a different light be focusing on keeping a healthy and clean environment. I also have been able to carry this into today’s current pandemic as we live through Covid-19.

ENGL 376

Attached is my final portfolio for Culture and Story: A Cultural Approach to Writing course. This is a composition of two stories that I wrote and edited throughout the Spring 2020 semester. These were stories in which I had complete freedom to write as long as they had a culture. In class we focused heavily on what culture is and how and why different cultures exist.

This was a course that gave me a mental break from my other courses that were very content heavy. While it was heavy in writing and time consuming, it was well worth it because it showed me the importance of reading for fun and even taking a break from your everyday life to dive into a new challenge. I hope to continue writing different things throughout the years. I hope to reflect upon what I have writing one day and see the growth. I hope people know that even if they don’t think they can do something, as long as they try their best, they can accomplish anything because that was me with this class. I was not the best at writing fictional stories, but when I wrote from the heart, one could tell and that is when it was a success.

ASL 210

For two semesters I have taken American Sign Language with Dr. Emmett Jones in order to fulfill my World Language Perspective requirement. I was surprised when I found the language harder to learn than I initially expected. Many ASL signs look nearly identical and have to be deciphered based on the context of each sentence. Translating was one of the most challenging parts for me because ASL has a different grammatical structure than English and it’s difficult to rearrange the words to make sense in my mind without losing a sign in the process— which can completely alter the meaning of the sentence. The most surprising thing I learned in this course was that there are three different versions of Sign Language: American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgin Signed English (PSE), and Signed Exact English (SEE). While ASL is the most widely used and accepted version among the Deaf community, PSE is the one that is most commonly taught in schools to children. I was confused when I learned this and wondered why the most accepted version among people who actually used the language wouldn’t be taught. However, after a lot of research I found that PSE is used more like a continuum between ASL and English, serving as a bridge for the deaf and hearing.

The biggest thing that I took away from this course is that a hearing person does not need to know perfect ASL in order to have relationships with people of the Deaf and hard of hearing community. My ASL is nowhere near perfect but on the two occasions where I went to Dr. Jones’ workshop for families with deaf children, I found that I was able to effectively communicate with the people there because they knew and appreciated that I was seeking to learn their language. I once thought ASL was only used among the deaf community but I have begun to notice it among many groups of people such as children, individuals with verbal disabilities, and most prevalently a little girl in my family who has Cerebral Palsy. I have used the knowledge from both semesters of this course and applied it to my life in teaching my niece basic signs so that she can understand her cousin with CP and communicate with others before her verbal language skills develop. Both semesters of this course allowed me a new perspective on the Deaf community and how far empathy and the desire to be educated can go.
