What is a community health nurse?

The community nurse has a goal defined as, “to prevent disease and preserve, promote, restore, and protect health for the community and the population within it” (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014, pp.2-3). Their main roles consist of education, teaching, and treatment with patients in order to maintain health (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014). These nurses roles are seen in places such as: clinics, schools, and rehabilitation centers.

How can they help you?

Nurses in these roles are especially specialized to teach and educate patients on health promotion and prevention strategies. They are equipped to answer questions regarding health, nutrition and exercise. The research will find resources for community health nurses to be able to use for education, for themselves and for their patients about today’s health of the world and how to combat these realities.

Nurses, this is your role:

“If the general population does not believe that a problem exists, then corrective action will be hampered” (Emmet & Chandra, 2015, p.92). The very first thing that must be done to bring about change is to have the public identify this health issue within society. Health education is not an innate skill, but instead a learned one. This is such an important task held by the community health nurse!

People’s environments are their strongest determinant of health (Seguin et al., 2014). This must be assessed within the patient in order to determine the best and most effective interventions. The community health nurse has the responsibility to bring this information to their patients, and especially targeted towards those of low socioeconomic status with realistic goals and resources to achieve those goals (Emmett & Chandra, 2015, p.92). Emmet & Chandra (2015) identifies that nurses are the agent of the health literacy in the world and best communicate with a lot of people in the world when they go to receive medical care. Therefore, this research is directed towards nurses to better their practice and to become better equipped to teach their patients about true health versus normalized health from the people the patient surrounds themselves with (Duffy, 2019, p.28).
