Welcome to the blog! This blog will be focusing on combatting the distortions we as Americans have on health. We have normalized the issues we face such as the following: diabetes, hypertension, obesity, increased stress, poor physical and mental health, long-term chronic conditions and non-communicable diseases (Godrich et al., 2017, p.585-586; Seguin et al., 2014). This is a serious problem because the statistics are rising of people experiencing disease and people are thinking this is acceptable. In addition, in the U.S. the current interventions are limited to treatment instead of prevention, “while we spend our budget dollars paying for the consequences (e.g., health care costs) of poverty and food insecurity, other nations have developed systems that invest in children and families so that they do not incur these harms or costs” (Fernald & Gosliner, 2019, p.1674). The purpose of this blog is to give community health nurses resources to share with patients about health promotion. This is defined as, “to prevent disease and preserve, promote, restore, and protect health for the community and the population within it” (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014, pp.2-3). In addition, this blog is important for anyone who is considering their health status and what to do if they feel like they have fallen into this category of accepting their health rather than prioritizing their health. There will be resources on what the current statistics of health are regarding certain diseases, there will be information on what a community health nurse is with additional resources, there will be statistics on current trends on nutrition and exercise within today’s society and there will be some helpful websites to assist with your health journey! Let’s get started. Click on the tabs starting with statistics and you will likely be very surprised!
