Government & Politics

I will create an infographic to demonstrate the layout of government & politics at Longwood.

The Student Government Association (SGA) at Longwood University is in place to advance the student’s interests. The elected officials of SGA act as the voice for our school community. These representatives work to enhance the spirit of Longwood University, prevent discrimination, raise student awareness, protect student rights, and much more. SGA members promote the cultural, intellectual, social, and personal development of students and hold power for Longwood students and the Longwood community.

The Mayor and council members of Farmville hold political power of the town. They act as a voice for community members and are responsible for all ordinances and resolutions as well as establishing policies. Some town council obligations include approving annual operating budget and setting the town’s tax rates and fees along with determining land use and zoning decisions.

The town of Farmville is divided into five wards with one council member elected per ward and two council members elected at-large. Council members serve four year staggered terms with election held on the first Tuesday in May in even numbered years. Monthly council meetings are held every second Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. in the Council Chamber of the second floor of the Farmville Town Hall. Meetings are open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend.
