Race, Class, Gender, Disability, & Sexuality

Race is always a tricky subject for many people to talk about. While taking many class I have learned how much race plays a part into society today. Race is a factor that many people overlook, myself included. While taking sociology 333 I learned that many things that happens before influence today. Systematic racism is placed into many different areas of social. I have learned that many of the experiences I had that I thought was normal but I learned that it was not. I now think about how race is intertwined into many different sectors of life.

Social class often defines how a person can live. The higher the social class the more respect you have earned in society. I never knew about the different social classes. After taking sociology 320 I learned how much social class has an effect on inequality. The higher the social class the more opportunities you have. With education if you are in a high social class you are able to provide your children with different tutors and opportunities rather than someone is in a low social class. I have been able to explore how class can help and harm different individual within institutions.

Gender often plays a huge part into how job and actions are looked at. Before taking sociology 320 I never understood how things outside of jobs are factored by gender. Many different institutions are affected by a person’s gender. Education is one institution that is factor by gendered. There are different expectations for girls than there are for boy. I try to break those factors by encouraging the younger generations around me to try things outside of their normal gender roles. This will encourage them to be their own self.

Before taking sociology 284 I never fully understood everything that was wrong with certain parts of society. I was able to dive deeper into many of the problem that individuals with disability face. One huge problem that individuals with disabilities face not being taken seriously. Many times, if the disability is not seen people do not take it in consideration. My accommodations society over looks. I now ensure that I make certain accommodations just to ensure that any disability has the same rights and opportunities that I have.

Many people do not take into account how much sexuality can be used as an inequality. Although sexuality can be hided once it is exposed society can treat someone poorly. Before taking sociology 333 I never knew how much sexuality could be affected by how a person views you. Much like race sexuality is something an individual cannot just change. I now view sexuality as a way to bring people together.

In my future career I will encounter inequality. As a black women working in stem systematically the working class is against me. I hope to be working as a data analysis. Doing so I will be looking at demographic data. Demographic data can explain much of the inequality America faces today. I hope to be able to analyze the data properly and promote change within STEM and society.
