The formal report was the last, yet largest assignment I completed in this course. It was a group assignment with the same partners we had for the brochure and press release assignments. For this project my team posed as a consulting company for an organization we created. My team created a private practice speech, language, and hearing clinic called Farmville Speech and Hearing. Our goal was to analyze three different private practice speech, language, and hearing websites using visual appeal, overall organization, and information on provided services as evaluation criteria. Through the evaluations of each website, we then created recommendations for Farmville Speech and Hearing.
I had never written a formal report before; if it had not been for the in-depth classroom instruction, text book, and my teammates, I would have struggled with this project. This report allowed me to work on each of the course learning outcomes. This project required a variety of documents, so I was able to work on my writing skills and create multiple professional documents in various genres. I practiced my block letter formatting skills through the creation of the Letter of Authorization. I learned new research skills related to professional writing and created graphs and charts to display the research I found. My team’s final product was 28 pages long which required not only a lot of personal dedication, but group collaboration. I had to learn how to adapt my schedule in order to complete this project within the time constraints. Personally, I had to work on my time management skills and punctuality. I Worked on these skills by setting deadlines for myself and scheduling meetings days in advance. The presentation that accompanied the report taught me how to present in a collaborative style. I have completed group presentations before, but for this project I had to be familiar with my teammates content. I found this project to be very rewarding. I not only learned rules for formal writing, but I discovered new features in Microsoft Office and Excel. This project was a challenge but I am a better writer for completing it.
