Welcome to my Professional Writing Portfolio! This is where I am displaying my assignments for English 470: Professional Writing. This portfolio showcases my individual and group projects. I have included an overall summary of my works for this class on the conclusion page. I have also stated how I will transfer the skills I learned to my career as a speech-language pathologist.

Professional Profile

My name is Tanna Turner and I am currently a senior Communication of Sciences and Disorders (CSDS) major with a minor in Special Education. I plan to graduate from Longwood University in May of 2019. My goal is to pursue a master’s degree and eventually a PhD in CSDS. I have observed and shadowed several SLPs in the past year to help me reach this goal. I have shadowed at Southeastern Therapy for Kids, Danville Speech and Hearing Center, Audiology Hearing Aid Associates, and Prince Edward County Schools. I am hardworking and passionate. I put my very best into every project and work well with others. If I come across an obstacle, I find alternative routes to overcome it. Through my observations at various speech, language, and hearing clinics, I have become patient and compassionate. I have learned how to communicate with adults and children with an array of speech, language, hearing, and neurological impairments. Seeing these individuals fight to regain their communication skills inspires me to become the best SLP I can so I can assist them on their journey to recovery.

ePortfolio Purpose and Content

The purpose of this ePortfolio is to display my projects and assignments from English 470, the professional writing course I enrolled in during the Fall 2018 semester. The correspondence project was the first assignment I completed for this class. It is composed of two parts: the Bad News Letter and Persuasive Letter. This was an individual assignment. The brochure and press release were the next two assignments I completed. These were done in groups. My group created a fictional device and had to advertise it. The last assignment was the formal report. It was also a group assignment. For this project my group created an organization called Farmville Speech and Hearing. We then took the role of a website design consulting company and evaluated three private practice speech, language, and hearing websites. Our goal was to do a website analysis on each site then provide recommendations to Farmville Speech and Hearing so they can improve their site.Through these assignments and projects I was able to achieve the course learning outcomes listed below. I am now able to analyze and produce writing genres commonly found in professional world as well as write in plain English. I have also learned how to conduct research in a manner that allows me to create content for a variety of professional documents. Going along with the research, I have experimented with different document design techniques and now know the do’s and don’ts professional document design. This course has let me hone my oral communication skills and taught me how to collaborate with others on unfamiliar topics.
