The Office of Student Research will award Faculty Excellence in Mentoring Awards (FEMA) to selected faculty nominated by undergraduate students for their work in mentoring inquiry-based activities. Only current Longwood University undergraduate students may submit nominations. Only tenured and tenure-track faculty, clinical educators, lecturers, visiting professors and administrative and professional faculty with academic rank may be nominated.

Students must electronically submit the Nomination Form below to the Office of Student Research (osr@longwood.edu) with the subject line “2017 FEMA,” Please direct any questions about the nomination process to Crystal S. Nominations are due April 10, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. Last year’s recipients of the award are not eligible.
What is a Digital Research Presentation?
It is a research presentation in PowerPoint made accessible to the Internet. It condenses research for general audiences. Your presentation should be able to stand alone, as it will be viewed online via SlideShare. PowerPoint presentations uploaded to SlideShare cannot feature embedded video, audio, voiceovers or animation. Presenters can make use of images, color and text to make their presentations pop. I already have a research poster/paper/project. Why should I do a Digital Presentation?
A Digital Presentation creates a file that can be archived through the Office of Student Research in Digital Commons, Longwood University’s institutional repository. This creates a permanent link accessible by individuals around the world. Students can also embed the link in resumes and online profiles.
Do I have to have a completed research poster/paper/project to do a Digital Presentation?
No. You can create a Digital Presentation from any research-based or scholarly assignment that is in-progress.
SPUR is for everyone!
Students from all disciplines can participate. They may submit a proposal based on works-in-progress, course assignments, completed research projects, even posters for other poster sessions.
SPUR is fun!
Presenters as well as attendees can earn points through social media and win the SPUR SwagBag, which includes a SPUR T-shirt, hat, water bottle, tablet holder and power charging bank, all in a canvas SPUR bag!

All presenters will have their abstracts and digital presentations deposited in Digital Commons, Longwood University’s institutional repository, which is searchable and available to individuals within Longwood and around the world. The Office of Student Research (OSR) is pleased to invite undergraduate students from all disciplines to submit proposals for Spring Presentation of Undergraduate Research (SPUR) at Longwood University, which will take place April 26, 2017, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m in Lankford Student Union. Students may share research-in-progress, research from poster sessions and scholarship events and course-based research projects.
The morning of Student Research Day (April 26), OSR will release digital presentations submitted by students through its SlideShare account and track social engagement throughout the day. From 1-4, the university community can meet the presenters (who will be available in 30-minute intervals) during the Meet-and-Greet, as well as enjoy sponsored panels (subject to change).

The Office of Student Research (OSR) invites proposals from tenured and tenure-track faculty from all programs, departments and colleges to develop or enhance an existing undergraduate course and offer it during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 academic years. OSR will select three 100- and 200-level courses and three 300- and 400-level courses. Each selected faculty member will be awarded a one-time $3,500 stipend to enhance and teach at least one section of the course during the specified academic years. The Office of Student Research (OSR) will provide grants up to $500 to undergraduate students to defray costs associated with conducting research. Appropriate research expenses include laboratory equipment; media equipment; equipment for work in the field; art supplies; software; photocopying, printing and film processing; communication costs (postage, phone, etc.) and travel to support the investigative phase of the student’s work, such as travel to field sites, museums, archives, or libraries. Funds may not be used to fund expenses related to course-based research assignments, such as posters. Please note that a hard copy of the application and faculty recommendation form are now required.

The Office of Student Research will provide grants up to $500 to undergraduate students to support student travel to professional conferences or meetings to share the results of their scholarship. The grants may be used to cover applicable travel expenses, including airfare and mileage, lodging, conference registration, food and other expenses. Undergraduate students are invited to apply to LU-PRISM (Longwood University Perspectives on Research In Science and Mathematics), our residential summer research program. This program combines practical training in specific research techniques with activities designed to put the research into the context of larger goals of modern science, technology, and mathematics. The titles and areas of the research projects are summarized in the Call for Student Applications below. Completed applications, including unofficial transcripts and one page narrative statement, are due no later than 5pm on Monday, November 7, 2016. Information on how to submit these materials and what is expected of students in this program is detailed in the student application.
Duration: 8 weeks (May 29 – July 21)
