The American Political System POSC 100

I took The American Political System POSC 100 during my first semester at Longwood, and it was the first class I ever attended at Longwood. The class was taught by Dr. Eric Hodges, and this was this first class he ever taught at Longwood. There was definitely a learning curve for both student and professor in this class, but it was very educational and involved real-world experiences.

The objectives of this class were to gain an understanding of how the American governments operated, and how to interact with the government. This was achieved through the Demos Project, which was a semester-long group project where the group formed a Political Action Committee, which I headed. After my project proposal was accepted, our group set off researching the topic of our proposal, which was stopping the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. After lots of research, we were instructed to reach out to members of the community who could help us advocate our cause, and we interacted with the Farmville Herald, the Longwood Rotunda, and various members of the local, state, and federal governments. The defining moment of the project was airing our concerns regarding the pipeline to Congressman Denver Riggleman, who was supportive of our cause. The project taught me about how to interact with members of the community and government, and how to advocate for a cause I am passionate about.

Another major thing I took away from this project was how to work with and manage a major group project. This was the first large-scale semester-long group project I had ever worked on before, and there was a definite learning curve to managing it. I learned how to distribute work among group members, how to hold group members accountable, and how to take ideas from all members of the group and working them into the project. These skills will be very helpful as I continue my education at Longwood.

The final project for this course was an eight-page research paper, and the topic I was to write about was the presidential nomination project in the United State of America. I wrote of the inefficiency of the nomination project, and of possible reforms that could be made to the system. The full paper is attached below.
