Biography

My name is Devon Shifflett, and my journey as a first-generation immigrant and college student at Longwood University has been an enriching and transformative experience. I am from Fluvanna County, Virginia, and I graduated from Fluvanna County High School in 2019. In that same year, I earned my general education certificate from Piedmont, Virginia Community College, a milestone that laid the foundation for my collegiate pursuits. With many of my general education requirements fulfilled, I was poised to dive headfirst into my academic passions at Longwood.

At Longwood University, I embarked on a dual major in piano performance and history, allowing me to embrace my love for both music and the past. My time here has been marked by a genuine exploration of the historical discipline, where I’ve honed my skills in writing about history and critically analyzing historical documents. I have also engaged in various independent studies, one of which has resulted in published research. Concurrently, my commitment to music has remained unwavering, as I’ve continued to dedicate myself to the piano, an instrument I’ve been passionately studying for over fourteen years.

In addition to my academic endeavors, I’ve been actively involved in the musical community in Farmville. I currently serve as a piano instructor, teaching both group and individual lessons through the Longwood Center for Community Music. This role has not only allowed me to share my love for music with others but has also provided a unique opportunity to give back to the community that has nurtured my own growth. Additionally, I have had the privilege of being the organist and pianist at Johns Memorial Episcopal Church, further deepening my musical involvement and my connection to the local community.

My journey as a first-generation immigrant and college student has instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude and determination. The opportunities and support I have encountered at Longwood have been instrumental in shaping my path, and I am excited to continue my exploration of history and music as I move forward in my academic and personal pursuits.
